Premijer liga is the top-tier professional men’s basketball league in Croatia. Organised by the Croatian Basketball Federation (HKS), it was established in 1991 after the collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The competition sits at the apex of the domestic basketball pyramid, serving as the primary stage for national club basketball. For the 2024–25 campaign, the league features twelve clubs, including Cibona Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb, and KK Cedevita Junior. The structure underwent a significant reform ahead of the current season. The previous system, which divided the season into a Championship Round and a Relegation Round, has been abandoned. Instead, the league now operates a standard double round-robin format comprising 33 rounds. This ensures every team plays each opponent twice, home and away. Following the regular season, the top eight sides advance to the playoffs. The knockout phase begins with quarter-finals and semi-finals, both contested as best-of-three series. The championship is decided in a best-of-five final. Cibona Zagreb holds the record for the most titles won in the league’s history, securing 21 championships. The current champions are KK Zadar, who claimed the 2024–25 title by defeating KK Split in the final. The league also manages a direct relegation spot; the side finishing in last place is sent down to the Second Tier, known as the Prva muška liga. The competition’s naming rights have changed over the years, with previous iterations including the A-1 Liga and HT Premijer Liga. While it runs independently, Croatian clubs often participate in the regional ABA League, which offers a different competitive environment. The league remains the central focus for domestic basketball development and success in the country.
