AZS Poznań Women

The club had brushed against the top before, taking bronze the previous season and finishing third as far back as 1931, but the runner-up finishes either side of the title, in 1932 and again in 2003–04, mark how rarely Poznań got that close.

The women's section grew out of the Akademicki Związek Sportowy, the student sports association founded in Poznań on 5 November 1919, with basketball added in the 1930s. That academic root still gives the team its nickname, Akademiczki, and the club now competes as Enea AZS Politechnika Poznań, tied to the Poznań University of Technology.

Małgorzata Dydek came through the club before becoming the first Polish player in the WNBA, though her career took her far beyond Poznań. Results were not always kind at home: AZS dropped out of the top flight and spent five seasons in the lower divisions before working their way back into the Ekstraklasa for 2017–18. Daria Marciniak and Julia Adamowicz now lead the current squad.

Derby days still draw the sharpest interest, against MUKS Poznań within the city and against TS Ostrovia Ostrów Wielkopolski. Both are played out in a hall that seats just 600.
