Hogsbo Basket

Alvik Basket is the fixture Högsbo Basket circles each season, a top-flight meeting with no settled name of its own but with something at stake every time the two sides share a floor. The rest of the club's story runs quieter, closer to home. It began in 1958 as Högsbo BK in Gothenburg, and over the following decades the name changed with the sponsors: Kärcher Hisings-Kärra BBK, then New Wave Sharks, then Gothia Basket. The men's section won its two Swedish titles under those borrowed names, in 1994 as Kärcher and in 1996 as New Wave Sharks. In 2010, with public interest gone, the men's team was shut down, and the club that reformed afterwards took back its original name.

The women's side never went through any of that. Playing as Högsbo, it took the national title in both 1975 and 1976, and the shirt has carried the club's own name for longer than any of the sponsored men's sides ever did. That continuity is part of why the senior teams are known as the Högsbo Lions, a nickname that has stuck mainly to the women's squad. In 2019 the Lions reached the SM final again, forty-three years after the second title, and lost to Umeå in four games.

Matches are played at Gothia Arena in Västra Frölunda, a hall built for around a thousand, with roughly a third of the seats fixed and the rest folded out for fixtures. It is not a ground the club has ever needed to explain or apologise for; parents and volunteers keep the place running on match nights, which tells its own story about the size of the operation behind the results.

Both first teams are back in the top flight together this season, the men returning to Basketligan for 2024/2025 after a spell in Superettan, the women continuing in Basketligan Dam. Staying up alongside each other is the immediate task; the derby with Alvik will settle a good part of how that season is judged.
