«Flying Foxes»
Vienna's basketball scene used to be split across small clubs, each running its own age groups with barely enough players to fill them. In 2018 three of the city's clubs, Post SV Wien, Sportunion Döbling and Vienna 87, merged into a single organisation, Vienna United.
The merged club kept a name older than itself: Post SV Wien had gone by the Flying Foxes since August 2000, and Vienna United carried the nickname forward in the same yellow and blue. Since the 2022/23 season the senior sides have played under the Vienna United Basketball name.
Most of the silverware in the club's record dates from before the merger. Post SV Wien won the Austrian championship in 1949 and 1951, then not again until 2007, 2008 and 2009. Vienna United now competes in the Austrian Cup, the KBSL Women and the Zweite Liga, and its meetings with the Vienna Timberwolves and BasketFlames are known locally as the Wiener Derby.
The club now runs on a scale none of its three founders managed alone: more than 800 members across 42 teams, all training out of the Posthalle. The most recent title, though, went to none of the senior sides — the under-18s won the Vienna Easter Tournament in 2022, the age group the whole merger was meant to keep together.
