Winning the 2. Basketball-Bundesliga in 2025 took the Wörthersee Piraten back to where they had spent three decades before slipping out in 2011: the top flight. The club got there by beating the Mistelbach Mustangs in the final series, 90:74, closing a gap that had opened when it dropped down from the ÖBL fourteen years earlier.

The club started life in 1978 as ABC Klagenfurt, then took its sponsor's name twice over — B.K. Regenerin, then B.K. Citroën — before settling on Wörthersee Piraten in 1997. Locally people just say die Piraten. Its best ÖBL season came in 2000/01, when it finished runner-up after losing the deciding game to the Kapfenberg Bears by four points, 78:74.

Kerry McIntyre is still the name attached to the club's oddest distinction: named MVP of the Austrian Cup in 1998 while playing for the side that lost the final. Two more cup finals followed, in 1999 and 2003, both lost as well.

The club now runs its own pipeline rather than relying only on imports — a youth academy spanning U10 to U19 has produced players such as Lukas Simoner and Andreas Nuck. Andreas Kuttnig combines the sporting director's job with coaching the first team.

Home games are played at Sporthalle St. Peter on Reichenberger Straße, in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Between top-flight status won and top-flight status lost sit 30 years.
