What the club has produced since is better known abroad than the trophies. Diego Pérez, Maxi Pereira and Martín Cáceres all came through the youth ranks and all three were in the Uruguay squad that reached the semi-finals in South Africa in 2010.

The colour came first and by accident. When the club registered in 1913 the shirts were black with light blue and green stripes, but violet was the only shade the league had not already assigned, so violet it became — and La Viola has been the name ever since.

Home is the Estadio Luis Franzini in Parque Rodó, opened on 31 December 1963 and owned outright by the club, which is not the norm in Montevideo. It holds 18,000. The fixture that fills it is the one against Danubio .

In 2014 the club reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores before losing to Nacional of Paraguay.

The starting point was a strike. Glassworks employees in Punta Carretas formed a team on 15 March 1913 and called it Defensores de la Huelga — the defenders of the strike. The name was shortened later; the merger with an athletics club founded in 1910 came in 1989, on the same March date.
