Lorient

Lorient are back among France's elite after winning Ligue 2 on 10 May 2025, the second time in five years they have taken that route back to the top flight, following an earlier title cut short by the pandemic in 2020. Since the start of 2026 the club has passed into full ownership of Black Knight Football Club, the group that also holds Bournemouth in England.

The club traces back to a local sports circle, La Marée Sportive, which a Mademoiselle Cuissard and her son Joseph turned into a football side in the mid-1920s; the amateurs won the Championnat de l'Ouest in 1929 before professional status arrived in 1967. Money trouble nearly ended the story in 1978, when the club went bankrupt and dropped as far as the sixth division; supporters formed their own association to keep it alive, and by 1985 Lorient had climbed back to the second tier. Third-tier titles followed in 1991 and 1995, and in 1998 the club reached Ligue 1 for the first time.

Its high point came in 2002, when Lorient beat Bastia 1-0 in the Coupe de France final on a goal from captain Jean-Claude Darcheville, and lost the League Cup final that same season to Bordeaux. A seventh-place finish in 2009/10 remains the best league placing in the club's history. Home games are played at the Stade du Moustoir, where the team turns out in the black-and-orange chequered kit, or "damier", that gives Lorient one of its old nicknames; the more common one, Les Merlus, recalls Brittany's fishing trade.

No name is more tied to that rise than Christian Gourcuff's. He managed the club across three spells between 1982 and 2014, took Lorient into Ligue 1 and stayed long enough to shape how the academy that later produced players such as André-Pierre Gignac and Kevin Gameiro was run.
