Rennes FC

Rennes' fiercest fixture goes back to before the club had a stadium worth naming: the Derby breton against Nantes, the two clubs standing for the whole of Brittany rather than just their own city limits, with Brest, Guingamp and Lorient filling in as the lesser regional grudges.

The club that plays those matches grew out of a university, not a neighbourhood. Students at the University of Rennes put the side together, and on 4 May 1904 it absorbed the older FC Rennes, a merger that gave the young team the numbers and standing to matter locally. By 1932 it was one of the founding members of the professional Ligue 1.

Three Coupe de France wins mark out the honours board — 1965, 1971 and 2019 — bracketing a span in which Rennes spent long stretches outside the top flight altogether, promoted from the second division in 1955/56 and again in 1982/83 before the 2019 final finally added a third cup to a list that had sat at two for 48 years. The 1971 Coupe de France came with a Coupe de France Super Cup with it, and Jean Prouff, player-manager at the time, won both of the earlier cups. The best league finish came far more recently: third place in 2019/20, still the club's high-water mark in the table.

Home games are played at Roazhon Park, capacity 29,778, in front of supporters who know the shirt as red and black — the nickname Les Rouge et Noirs describes the strip as much as the club. That colour combination has been on the pitch since a group of students first put a team together, on 10 March 1901.
