Norwich City

The story goes back to the Norfolk and Norwich Amateurs, whose players broke away in 1902 to form a professional side of their own, taking the name Norwich City and the nickname Citizens. Debts caught up with the club in December 1917, in the middle of the First World War, and it folded. It took until 15 February 1919 for the club to be pieced back together under the same name, and it has carried on unbroken since, without a merger or a rebrand along the way.

Carrow Road has been home since, holding 27,359 for the current season, all of it seated. The colours are yellow and green, the ground on which the Canaries nickname was built.

Two League Cup runs stand out from the trophy record: the club beat Rochdale 4–0 on aggregate in 1962, and lifted the cup again in 1985. Two further finals ended the other way, 0–1 defeats to Tottenham Hotspur in 1973 and to Aston Villa in 1975. Promotions have come more often than cups, going back to the 1933–34 Third Division South title that first took Norwich up through the divisions, and continuing through Championship title wins in the decades since.

Ipswich Town supply the fixture that matters most, the East Anglian derby, sometimes called the Old Farm derby, with Cambridge United a lesser rival on the fixture list. What Norwich have never done is add a major trophy above the League Cup — the top flight and its silverware have stayed out of reach.
