The CSA T20 Challenge sits at the top tier of South Africa's domestic cricket structure, contested by professional franchise teams rather than provincial sides. Unlike the second-tier provincial tournament, this competition features a fixed set of franchises with no promotion or relegation. The event was established in the 2003–04 season and has evolved through various sponsorship titles, currently operating under the name CSA T20 Challenge.
The season format combines a group stage with a knockout playoff phase. Teams compete against one another to secure positions in the semi-finals and final. In the most recent edition, the final took place at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, where the Lions secured the title by defeating the Dolphins. The Titans hold the record for the most victories in the competition's history, including consecutive wins in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons. The Dolphins were the inaugural champions when the tournament debuted.
Cricket South Africa has announced plans to merge this competition with the CSA T20 Knock-Out Competition for the 2026–27 season. The unified structure, to be called the Pro20 Cup, will eliminate the distinction between franchise and provincial tiers in the T20 format. This restructuring aims to streamline the domestic calendar and create a single unified competition.
The participating franchises include the Boland, Dolphins, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Lions, North West, and Titans. These teams form the core of the tournament, competing annually for the domestic T20 crown. The competition remains a key platform for players to showcase their skills within the South African cricket ecosystem.
