About the player
Álvaro Barreal made his first-team debut at Vélez Sarsfield in 2018, coming through the Buenos Aires club's academy before a move abroad reshaped his career. In September 2020 FC Cincinnati signed him for a fee in the region of 1.5–1.7 million dollars, with Vélez retaining a 25% sell-on interest.
His time in MLS produced the clearest highlight of his career: a goal in the US Open Cup earned him a nomination for the FIFA Puskás Award, and in 2023 he helped Cincinnati to the Supporters' Shield, also earning a place in the MLS All-Star squad that year. A loan spell took him to Cruzeiro in Brazil in 2024, a stint that pointed towards where his career would eventually settle.
On 17 December 2025, Barreal completed a permanent move to Santos for a fee estimated at around 3.4 million euros, taking the number 22 shirt at the Brazilian club. He wasted little time making an impression on his new league, finishing as Santos's top scorer in the 2025 Serie A campaign.
At youth international level, Barreal was part of the Argentina under-20 side that won the COTIF tournament in 2018, featuring in five matches and scoring twice. He has not been called up to the senior national team.
