Cibona began in April 1946 as the basketball section of the Sloboda sports society, one of several works clubs formed in Zagreb in the years after the war. It changed hands and names more than once in its early years, carrying the labels SD Zagreb, Vihor, Polet and Lokomotiva before food-industry sponsors gave it the name Cibona in 1975, a nod to the Latin *cibus bonus*, good food. The nickname Vukovi, the Wolves, has a plainer source: the club's old home court at Tuškanac.

Dražen Petrović joined in 1984, and the following year Cibona beat Real Madrid 87–78 in the European Champions Cup final in Athens, Petrović scoring 36 points. They retained the title in 1986 against Žalgiris Kaunas in Budapest, and added the Saporta Cup and the European Super Cup either side of those finals. Petrović's number 10 has not been worn since.

Domestically the club has barely loosened its grip on the Croatian league, with 21 titles including the 2025–26 championship, and its academy has kept sending players into the NBA, among them Dario Šarić and Ivica Zubac.

Cibona's oldest rivalry runs against Split, the two sides' meetings known in Croatia simply as the Croatian Derby; Zadar is counted as a rival too, though with less of the edge that Split carries.
