CS Uruguay

The nearest Club Sport Uruguay ever came to a continental crown ended not on a pitch but in an argument over a calendar. Having won the Torneo Centroamericano de la Concacaf in 1964, the Costa Rican side were due to meet the Surinamese club S.V. Leo Victor in the final of the Copa de Campeones de la Concacaf. The two sides could not agree on dates, the match was never played, and the club from Coronado was left with the regional title and nothing more.

The name itself was a tribute rather than a claim of nationality. It honours Uruguay's 1930 World Cup-winning side, and the Uruguayan immigrants who founded the club on 3 January 1936. The colours followed the same logic: yellow and black, borrowed from Peñarol of Montevideo, replaced the club's original red and black.

Coronado, in the province of San José, is still home. The ground, Estadio Municipal El Labrador, holds 2,500 — modest even by the standards of Costa Rica's Liga de Ascenso, where Uruguay now plays.

The best-known name to pass through the club's dugout is Paulo Wanchope, who took charge for the 2010–11 season. A former Costa Rica international, Wanchope arrived at a club whose biggest silverware was already decades old, and whose identity had been borrowed from a country most of its players had never seen.
