Independiente Medellín Women

Medellín's football identity has long belonged to two clubs sharing the same stadium, and when Independiente Medellín put together a women's side, it inherited a support base already fluent in the club's colours before a single ball was kicked. The team, known as Las Poderosas, plays out of Estadio Atanasio Girardot, the venue the men's team also calls home, and carries a crest updated in 2022 but otherwise unchanged from the badge worn across the whole institution.

The women's team was formed on 21 June 2019, and its first season produced the closest thing to a landmark it has managed so far: a run to the Liga Femenina Profesional final, where América de Cali beat them 3-2. No title has followed since. The nickname Las Poderosas sits alongside the broader club nickname, El Equipo del Pueblo, a label that predates the women's section by decades and speaks to how Independiente Medellín has always framed itself in the city.

Colombian women's football measures itself against Cali, and that 2019 final loss to América de Cali left an early marker of where the gap needed closing. It is the rivalry that matters most to a team still building its own history rather than borrowing all of it from the men's side.
