Mwatate United

Mwatate United has no fixed enemy. The National Super League gave it the coastal tag "derby" against Mombasa United, but that is a press label for two teams sharing a region, not a rivalry built over seasons — Taita-Taveta County has no other club at this level to grudge against, so the closest thing to a feud has been with administrators. In March 2025 the club won reinstatement to the NSL after a legal dispute with Dimba Patriots FC, who were suspended and struck from the league as a result.

The club plays out of Wundanyi, also known as Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium, 3,000 capacity, in a county better known for the Taita Hills than for football. Promotion has come the hard way: a 7-6 penalty defeat to Shabana FC at Kasarani Stadium cost it a place in 2018, and it took until the 2019-2020 season, curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, for Mwatate United to be declared champions of FKF Division One League Zone A and go up.

Staying in the second tier has proved harder than reaching it. The club has been relegated before, and the bench has turned over fast enough that Evans Mafuta, appointed in 2025, was its sixth coach in under four years. A KES 3 million sponsorship from Teita Sisal Estate in the 2023-2024 season gave the club some financial footing, and there have been cup runs — as far as the last 16 or the quarter-finals of the FKF Cup — without a trophy to show for them.

What the record does not give is a founding date. Mwatate United was already established in the National Division One, the third tier, by 2016, playing out of Wundanyi long before the promotion that put it on the wider football map.
