Kibera Black Stars

In 2018, a youth programme called Slum Soka started in Kibera, the informal settlement on the edge of Nairobi. What grew out of it now carries a men's senior side, a women's team, and the Kibera Black Stars Association that holds them together. The club still plays out of Kawangware, at the Hope Center Stadium, a 5,000-capacity ground also known as World Hope Stadium.

Kibera Black Stars have shuttled between Kenya's top flight, the Kenya Premier League, and the second-tier National Super League, where they reached as high as third place before settling back into the division for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. No silverware has followed them through those campaigns; what has followed is attention from outside the game. RUBiS Energy took the club on as a partner in 2021 to back grassroots sport in the area, and the kit supplier Beest has dressed the team in recent seasons — red and white in 2023-24, red-and-black stripes for 2025-26.

The women's side, Kibera Soccer Women FC, plays on in the Women's Premier League under the same association.

Nowhere does that show more than in the Kibera Derby, the meeting with Darajani Gogo FC.
