Nzoia Sugar FC

Bungoma is a sugar town, and for four decades its team carried the name of the company that grew the cane around it. Nzoia Sugar FC drew its players and its finances from the factory, and when the factory struggled, so did the club.

Founded in 1982 as Nzoia United, the side reached the CAF Champions League in 2003, going out in the First Round on its only continental appearance — still the high point of a history otherwise spent chasing, never winning, the Kenyan Premier League title. The closest it came was the 2022/23 season, when it sat second in the table without finishing there at the final whistle.

The sponsorship that gave the club its name also proved its weak point. Nzoia Sugar withdrew backing in 2005 and the club folded for the first time. It returned, rebuilt itself around Sudi Stadium, a ground that holds barely 1,000 spectators, and carried on in blue. Relegation and renewed financial constraints forced a second disbandment in October 2024.
