A youth club sponsored by a savings society is not, on the face of it, an unusual thing in Kenya. What sets Fortune Sacco apart is what it was built to fight. When the Fortune DT Sacco Society launched the team in Kerugoya in 2011, drug abuse and illicit brewing among young people in Kirinyaga County had become enough of a problem that the society decided football, not lending, was the tool it needed. The club exists because of that decision, run as a corporate social responsibility project by an institution whose main business has nothing to do with sport.

Fortune Sacco reached the Kenyan Premier League by finishing runners-up in the National Super League in the 2021/22 season, two points behind champions APS Bomet. It remains their high-water mark; the club has yet to add a trophy to it. The team plays its home fixtures at Kianyaga Stadium, which holds 3,000, and has turned out at Wang'uru Stadium when needed elsewhere in the county.

There is no nickname attached to the club — it is Fortune Sacco in the match programme and Fortune Sacco on the team sheet, nothing more, which fits an outfit that still carries the full name of the savings society behind it. That society counts more than 140,000 members, and its support is what keeps a small-town side with no silverware competing at the top level of Kenyan football at all.

Kirinyaga County's football rivalries tend to follow county lines, and for Fortune Sacco the sharpest of those is local.
