About
The Kenyan National Super League, soon to rebrand as the Kenyan Super League, operates as the second tier of the football pyramid in Kenya. It sits immediately below the Kenyan Premier League and above the FKF Division One. The Football Kenya Federation established the competition in July 2013 as part of a restructuring that created a six-tier system effective from the 2014 season.
The league features 20 clubs competing in a single table format. Teams play each other twice in a double round-robin system, resulting in 38 matches per side. There are no groups or zones within the current structure. The top two teams gain direct promotion to the Kenyan Premier League, while the third-placed side enters a playoff against the 16th-placed Premier League team for a final promotion spot. Conversely, the bottom two teams face relegation to the FKF Division One. Some officials have proposed changes to these rules for the upcoming season, but the official standing remains as described.
Gor Mahia stands as the most successful club in the history of this second-tier competition with three titles. Other notable winners include Kariobangi Sharks and Tusker FC. Nairobi United are the current champions following the 2024/25 season, having secured promotion.
The league is distinct from the Kenyan Premier League, which is the top-tier professional division founded in 1963. The Premier League is dominated by historic giants such as Gor Mahia, Tusker, and AFC Leopards. The Super League serves as the developmental and feeder league, featuring a mix of reserve sides, emerging clubs, and teams from regional zones. Participants in the 2024/25 season include 3K FC, Darajani Gogo, Equity Bank, Fortune Sacco, Gucha Stars, and Kabati Youth.
