Vihiga United

Mbale sits in Vihiga County, and for most of its history had no top-flight club of its own to follow. Vihiga United was created in 2014 to change that, and its home fixtures are played at the Bukhungu Stadium in nearby Kakamega, a ground built to hold 25,000.

Promotion to the Kenya Premier League came for the 2018 season, and the club has stayed a modest presence there since, without a major trophy to show for it. The green and yellow kit — yellow shirt with green sleeves, green shorts and socks — has become the more settled part of its identity than any run of results.

The county's more decorated football export wears the same colours under a different name: Vihiga Queens, the women's side set up the same year by the county government, has been crowned champion of the Kenya Women Premier League four times.
