Karma Jigme had already made his name running a resort in the town of Paro when he pulled together a group of enthusiasts to start a football club. The side went straight into the top flight, then still called the Bhutan National League, and finished runner-up in its debut season in 2018.

Paro have won six Bhutan Premier League titles between 2019 and 2025, plus the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk Memorial Gold Cup in 2019.

Paro wear red shirts and black shorts at home. Torsten Frank Spittler, previously in charge of the Nepal national team, arrived as technical director in 2022. In August 2024, Keisuke Honda signed a one-match deal to play for Paro in that same AFC Challenge League play-off.
