The club exists because Lee Neves, a political science professor in the city, wanted a team here once the USL announced its W League.
Stockton Cargo went undefeated through the regular season, 10-0-2, to take the USL W League NorCal Conference, then beat Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC 2-1 in the Western Conference semi-final before losing the final to Utah United. Vanessa Penuna, a midfielder from Fresno who had played for Boca Juniors and Toluca, scored the goal that clinched the division and was named to the league's Team of the Month for June.
