The Windsor Spitfires won 4-1 against the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League on Friday night at the Owen Sound Civic Arena. The result keeps both sides on zero points for the season, though they have played different numbers of matches — seven for Windsor and five for Owen Sound.
Windsor came into the evening fifth in the table while Owen Sound sat tenth, but those positions mean little at this stage of the campaign. The Spitfires had lost three of their previous four games, including a 2-4 defeat to Guelph Storm on Thursday, and needed to find some consistency.
They got it, and not through any great drama. We had called for the away side at 68 per cent confidence before kickoff, and the result confirmed that reading. Windsor looked sharper in transition and made Owen Sound pay whenever they slipped, which happened enough times to decide the match.
Owen Sound had won only once in five games before this evening, a 1-0 victory over Kitchener Rangers back in September. Their last four outings all ended in defeats, and this one followed the pattern — they started poorly and never got back into the contest.
The visitors finished with a comfortable margin and moved above their hosts in the standings, though the table remains fluid with so few games played. Windsor now have a slight edge in games played over Owen Sound, which could matter if the points stay level for a while.
By then, both teams will have added more matches to their totals and the picture will shift further. For now, Windsor have taken the opportunity to build momentum, while Owen Sound need to find something — anything — to change their fortunes.
