Virkya took on the Hunters on Friday evening in the Sumi-sarja, and came through 5:4 in a game that kept everyone on edge until the final whistle. The hosts, sitting 11th in the table, managed to claim all three points despite the visitors arriving in sixth place with an identical record.
And here's the thing — when a match ends 5:4, you know straight away it wasn't going to be a tactical masterclass. Both sides traded blows, and the result came down to who could finish better. The scoreline tells you everything: chances for both, and very little separating them.
To be fair, the standings don't mean much just yet. Both teams have played eight games, won three and four respectively, but both sit on zero points because the season has only just begun. There's nothing to compare here, no form table to speak of.
What you can see from their recent results is that neither side has found a rhythm. The hosts won 3:1 against S-Kiekko and 3:2 with JHT, but also lost heavily to Muik Hockey and to SaPKo. The Hunters have been similarly inconsistent — a 4:3 win over Laser HT, then a 3:4 defeat to Urho Jyväskylä.
By then, of course, we'd already called this one ahead of kick-off. We tipped the hosts at 64 per cent confidence, and against the odds they delivered. Not because they were dominant, but because in a game like this, one moment of quality separates the two sides.
The gap between them remains nothing, but the psychological edge goes to Virkya. They've shown they can score and they can hold their nerve when it counts. The Hunters will look to bounce back, but right now the hosts are the ones who found an answer.
