Goiás

Goiás Esporte Clube took shape there on 6 April 1943, founded by brothers Carlos and Lino Barsi.

That identity shows in the numbers no other Goiás club can match: 29 state championship titles. Nationally, the club has never broken through in the top flight — third place in 2005 remains the high point in the Série A — but it has twice climbed out of the second division as champion, in 1999 and 2012.

The club plays as Verdão, the big green side, at Estádio Hailé Pinheiro, known locally as the Serrinha, a ground holding 14,450 people. The Clássico Goiano against Atlético Goianiense, and the Clássico Rebanho against Vila Nova, the city's other two clubs, both of which keep the season's local fixtures competitive regardless of where either side stands nationally.

Continental football has produced near misses rather than trophies — a run to the Copa Sudamericana final in 2010 stands as the club's closest brush with a major international prize, alongside an earlier Copa do Brasil final in 1990. The Copa Verde, a regional competition for clubs from Brazil's north and centre-west, went to Goiás in 2023, though the club lost the final of the same tournament again in 2025. A Brazilian championship remains the one line missing from the record.
