No matchup on the Thunderbirds' calendar carries more weight than the one against Everett. The two sides have played the "Battle of the Sound" since the Silvertips joined the Western Hockey League.
Seattle's own path to Kent ran through three cities. The franchise started in 1971 as the Vancouver Nats, shifted to Kamloops two years later as the Chiefs, and only reached Washington in 1977, playing as the Seattle Breakers. The Thunderbirds name and the navy, green and white colours date to 1985, when the club dropped its original orange and blue.
The 2023 team came closest to the sport's biggest prize outside the NHL. Seattle won the Ed Chynoweth Cup that spring, then carried on to the Memorial Cup final, where Quebec Remparts beat them. It was the second WHL title in the club's history, the first having come in 2017 against Regina. Three further trips to the league final, in 1997, 2016 and 2022, ended the other way.
Kent has sent a steady stream of players to the NHL, among them Patrick Marleau and Mathew Barzal.
What the Thunderbirds have not managed, across three WHL finals wins and as many Memorial Cup appearances, is a Memorial Cup itself.
