About
The Western Hockey League operates as one of the three major junior hockey leagues in Canada, forming part of the Canadian Hockey League structure. Established in 1966, the competition began under the name Canadian Major Junior Hockey League before adopting its current title in 1978. It sits at the pinnacle of the junior hockey pyramid in the country, offering a pathway above NCAA and other junior leagues.
The league comprises 23 teams across North America, with 17 based in Canada and six in the United States. A planned expansion to 24 teams is scheduled for 2027, adding a franchise in Chilliwack. The regular season features 68 games per team, organised into Eastern and Western conferences, each containing two divisions. Playoffs follow a best-of-seven format, with the victor awarded the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
Notable achievements within the league include the Kamloops Blazers and Medicine Hat Tigers, who share the record for most championships with six titles each. The current champion is the Everett Silvertips, having won the 2025-26 season. The league is distinct from its counterparts in the OHL and QMJHL due to its extensive geographical spread, a physical style of play, and fewer restrictions on draft pick trading compared to the OHL.
Unlike systems with promotion and relegation, the WHL operates without such movement between tiers. This stability allows for long-term development within its existing framework. The league's history reflects significant evolution, particularly regarding its international reach and organisational changes since its inception. Its focus remains on developing talent within the minor hockey system without the pressure of external league movements.
