Joe Sakic arrived in Swift Current in 1986 and left two years later as the WHL's leading scorer, drafted by the Quebec Nordiques on his way to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He never played for a Memorial Cup winner in the city, but the team he had just left won it in 1989, beating the Saskatoon Blades 4–3 in overtime after taking the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions and the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy for the best regular-season record.

That 1989 side was not the franchise's first taste of a championship. The Broncos had started out in Swift Current in 1967, then left for financial reasons in 1974. In 1986, close to 200 investors from Swift Current bought the franchise back and brought it home.

The club has added two more Ed Chynoweth Cups since, in 1993 and 2018, and its production line of NHL players has kept running through Adam Lowry, Jake DeBrusk and, more recently, goaltender Stuart Skinner. The rivalry with the Regina Pats, known as the Battle of Saskatchewan, still gives the schedule its sharpest edge.

Home games are played at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex, where blue and green returned to the jerseys in 2014 after decades in which green had all but disappeared. The colours, like the franchise, went away for a while and came back to where they started.
