Trevor Linden arrived in Medicine Hat as a teenager and left as the face of the only back-to-back championship run the franchise has known, captaining the Tigers to the Memorial Cup in 1987 and again in 1988. That pairing of titles remains the high point of a club that George Maser, its owner through the decade, built around Linden and a group that also sent Lanny McDonald and Tom Lysiak toward the NHL.

The franchise itself did not start in southern Alberta. It arrived in 1970 as a transplant from Calgary, where it had played as the Centennials — and before that the Buffaloes, from 1966 — until George Maser, Joe Fisher and Rod Carry arranged the move east along Highway 3. That highway now defines the club's sharpest rivalry, with the Lethbridge Hurricanes; Calgary and Red Deer supply the others.

After the Linden-era titles, the Tigers went five straight seasons without a playoff appearance between 1998 and 2002, a stretch the club broke by rebuilding under general manager Rick Carriere and coach Willie Desjardins, who by 2019 held both jobs at once. The Ed Chynoweth Cup returned in 2004 and 2007, and again in 2025, while the 1973 league title was won under its old name, the President's Cup.

For 45 seasons the team played at the Medicine Hat Arena before moving into Co-op Place, a 7,100-seat building that opened in 2015. The 2007 and 2025 seasons each ended the same way: a Memorial Cup final reached and lost.
