Connor Bedard wore a Blades sweater before an NHL team ever picked his name, and in 2023 Saskatoon watched him go first overall.

Jim Piggott put the team together in 1964, first in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, then as a charter member of the Western Hockey League two years later, and the Blades have not moved since — the only WHL club to have spent every one of its seasons in the city it started in.

The Ed Chynoweth Cup has eluded them through five lost finals, in 1973, 1975, 1976, 1992 and 1994, and a Memorial Cup final loss to the Swift Current Broncos in 1989 sits alongside those near misses. What they have taken is the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy for the WHL's best regular-season record, five times over five decades.

The rivalry with the Regina Pats still carries the label Battle of Saskatchewan, and the Prince Albert Raiders fill out the other side of the province's hockey map. The colours went back to Royal Blue, Gold and White in 2017, closing out a run in Navy and White that had lasted since 2004.

Home games are played in front of up to 15,195 people at the SaskTel Centre.
