Lethbridge sits on the Alberta prairie where the Chinook winds sweep down off the Rockies and strip the snow inside a day, and it was that wind that gave the town's junior hockey team its name, chosen by fans in a contest when the Calgary Wranglers relocated south in 1987 to fill the gap left by the Broncos, who had left for Swift Current the year before.

The Hurricanes have played one season that towers over the rest of their history. In 1997 they won the Central Division, the Eastern Conference, the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy for the best regular-season record, and then the Ed Chynoweth Cup itself, sweeping the Seattle Thunderbirds 4–0 in the final. Nothing since has matched it, though a conference title in 2008 and a division title in 2016 kept the franchise in the WHL's upper half from time to time.

The low point came in 2013–14, when the team won just 12 games all season. The losses hit the balance sheet hard enough that shareholders had to vote on whether to keep the franchise in the city at all; they chose to stay.

Against the Medicine Hat Tigers, the games carry their own name in Alberta, the Battle of the Birds, and the table goes out of the window whenever the two sides meet.

The Hurricanes play out of the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, a rink that holds 5,479 for hockey. In 2023 the club brought in Bill Peters as head coach, and it is under Peters that the franchise is now trying to build back toward the kind of season 1997 still stands for.
