Bret Hart had already left Calgary for wrestling by the time investors settled on a name for the city's new junior team in 1994, but "The Hitman" gave them both the word and the logo, and he stayed on alongside Joe Sakic and Theoren Fleury. Calgary had lost two WHL clubs before that — the Centennials to Billings, the Wranglers to Lethbridge — so the Hitmen arrived as the third attempt to keep major junior hockey in the city, taking the ice for the first time in the 1995–96 season.

The Calgary Flames bought the franchise in 1997 for roughly $1.5 million.

Their best run came in 1999, when they beat the Kamloops Blazers for the Ed Chynoweth Cup and carried that form to the Memorial Cup final, where Ottawa's 67's beat them. They added a second league title in 2010, again in five games, this time over the Tri-City Americans, and reached that year's Memorial Cup semi-final before Brandon ended the run. The Scotty Munro Trophy for the best regular-season record came their way four times.

Games against the Edmonton Oil Kings still carry the weight of the Battle of Alberta, and one that continues to define their WHL season.
