The franchise carrying the Oil Kings name now is not the one that first wore it. An original Edmonton Oil Kings team won the Memorial Cup in 1963 and 1966 and the WHL title in 1970 and 1971 before moving to Portland and becoming the Winter Hawks.

That second life has already matched a good part of the first one's success: WHL championships in 2012, 2014 and 2022, and a Memorial Cup in 2014. Curtis Lazar's sportsmanship award that year came alongside Edgars Kulda's MVP trophy, the kind of tournament where a junior team briefly outshines the pro clubs sharing its city.

They share the Battle of Alberta with the Calgary Hitmen, the province's junior version of a rivalry that runs through both cities' senior teams. Since 2016 the Oil Kings have played out of Rogers Place, a considerable step up from the rinks junior hockey usually calls home, and one more sign of how closely this club's fortunes are tied to Edmonton's.
