In 1991 the Spokane Chiefs beat the Drummondville Voltigeurs 5–1 to lift the Memorial Cup, the second time an American-based team had done it. The championship also closed a story that began the year before, when Brett Sports, led by Bobby Brett, took over a franchise that had started life not in Washington at all but in Kelowna, British Columbia, playing three seasons there as the Kelowna Wings before the move south in 1985 brought the Chiefs name to Spokane and the Western Hockey League.

Seventeen years later the Chiefs won it again, beating the Kitchener Rangers 4–1 for a second Ed Chynoweth Cup and a second Memorial Cup, with Tyler Johnson named tournament MVP.

The Chiefs play out of the Numerica Veterans Arena, built to hold just over 10,000 for hockey, and their fiercest nights come against the Everett Silvertips and the Seattle Thunderbirds — the "I-90 rivalry," named for the interstate that runs through all three cities. Ownership has changed hands more than once since Brett Sports, passing to Scott Carter in 2016 and to Matt Bardsley in 2022.

He captained both championship teams, in 1991 and again in 2008, finished as the franchise's all-time leading scorer, and had his number 16 retired.
