Estudiantes de Mérida and UCVM played out a 1-1 draw in the seventh round of the Clausura phase of the Venezuelan Primera División on Wednesday evening. Edwin Mosquera gave the visitors the lead before Wilken Ramírez struck a penalty to equalise for the hosts. The result leaves Estudiantes fifth with 31 points and UCVM seventh on 29, both sides having played 19 matches.
Mosquera ended a barren spell with a finish in the sixteenth minute, but Ramírez responded from the spot seven minutes later to rescue a point for his team. It was a tight affair from the start, and by then both sides were camped in the final third without creating much daylight. Estudiantes had one big chance created while UCVM managed none, though the visitors saw it out with more composure in front of goal.
The statistics tell a different story than the scoreboard. Estudiantes controlled 52 per cent of possession and completed 306 passes, but managed only one shot on target from five attempts inside the penalty area. UCVM, with 48 per cent possession, landed five shots on target from eleven attempts — a far more efficient return. That 0.36 shooting accuracy for the visitors versus 0.13 for the hosts explains how the scoresline remained level despite the hosts dominating territory.
Discipline became a factor as the match wore on. Juan Camilo Zapata and Wilken Ramírez went offside early in the second half, followed by yellow cards for Mosquera, Silva, Alegría, and Gonzalez. Ramírez and Zapata were substituted after receiving their bookings, while Mosquera was replaced in the seventy-first minute. The hosts made three changes in the eighty-eighth minute as they looked to close out the draw.
Estudiantes' recent form suggests this point could prove valuable. They won 2-1 against Real Esport on the last outing and have only lost once in five matches, though the loss to Rayo Zuliano remains a concern. UCVM came into the game with a 4-1 victory over Rayo Zuliano, but their away record has been fragile, including defeats to Zamora and Caracas. The table goes out of the window in these games, and both sides will take something from the encounter.
