Monterrey beat Chicago Fire 2:1 in the quarter-finals of the League Cup at CitiGik Stadium on Wednesday. The hosts took two goals in quick succession before the break, then held on after the visitors pulled one back through their goalkeeper. The result sends Monterrey through to the semi-finals.
Chicago Fire dominated the early exchanges, but Monterrey made them pay. Lucas Ocampos had two penalties saved in the space of three minutes, first in the 39th and then again in the 42nd. Viktor Guzman capitalised on the pressure, scoring twice in the 45th minute to give Monterrey a 2:0 lead.
Philip Zinckernagel pulled one back for Chicago in the 59th minute, but Oliver Pineda added a second for Monterrey in the 83rd. The visitors had more possession, 55 per cent, and launched 95 attacks compared to 75, but their shot accuracy was poor. They registered just three shots on target from six attempts.
Monterrey were more clinical, converting four of their 11 shots on target. They created two big chances against three for the visitors, but it was the efficiency in the box that made the difference. Both sides committed 10 fouls between them, with a total of seven yellow cards shown.
The win continues Monterrey's upward trajectory. They lost 2:0 to Leon on Saturday but had won three of their previous four matches, including a 6:1 demolition of Juarez. Chicago Fire's run of four consecutive victories came to an end, having beaten Orlando City, Portland Timbers, Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna in succession.
What stands out is how the game unfolded. Chicago camped in the final third and passed the ball with confidence, but Monterrey's defensive shape held firm. The two missed penalties were the turning point—Chicago had the opportunities to level the score, but they let the tie slip.
