PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk played out a 1-1 draw in the opening League Stage match of the UEFA Champions League at Philips Stadion. Gleiker Mendoza opened the scoring for the Ukrainian side just before half-time, only for Sergiño Dest to level for the Dutch hosts moments after the break. The result leaves both teams with one point from their first fixture.
Mendoza struck at 45+1, giving Shakhtar a narrow lead as they headed into the interval. The goal arrived from a moment of fine play, and by then the visitors had already worked themselves into the game. Dest responded quickly, finding the net at 48 minutes to restore parity. PSV were not left exposed after that equaliser, and the momentum shifted back their way.
There were plenty of bookings throughout, with Shakhtar accumulating six yellows to PSV's three. Mendoza picked up his second card at 47 minutes, a caution that came shortly after his goal. Armando Obispo and Ruben van Bommel were also booked for the hosts, while Valeriy Bondar, A. Turan and Dmytro Kryskiv joined the list for Shakhtar. The referee had plenty to do keeping control of the encounter.
PSV dominated possession at 54 per cent but struggled to create meaningful opportunities, registering zero big chances. They took nine shots with only two on target, a conversion rate that left them frustrated. Shakhtar had slightly more expected goals at 0.5 compared to PSV's 0.41, yet both sides failed to capitalise on what little they produced. And here's the thing — possession meant little when neither side could find the cutting edge.
Substitutions began to change the complexion of the game, with Kauã Elias replacing Mendoza at 66 minutes. PSV brought on Filip Kostić at 68 and Ricardo Pepi at 83, looking for something different going forward. Shakhtar introduced Isaque and Alisson late on in the closing stages. The match finished evenly balanced, with both teams moving on with a point each.
