Complutense Cisneros

The Estadio Nacional Complutense stands inside the Ciudad Universitaria in Madrid, on Avenida de Juan de Herrera, and holds 12,400 spectators. Cisneros play on the university campus because the club began there: in 1943 it was the rugby section of the Colegio Mayor Ximénez de Cisneros, a university residence, opened that same year. The residents' team took the nickname Los Colegiales, and the light blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks carry on from it.

The club began national competition in 1957 and won the Copa del Rey in 1967, 1969, 1979 and 1982. The league came later, in the 1975–76 and 1984–85 seasons. In 1985 the club also took the Copa Ibérica, its second, after the first in 1968.

Since then the record has been uneven. Financial difficulty and the professionalisation of the sport brought relegations in 1998 and 2003, and each time the club worked its way back up, winning the División de Honor B in 2001 and 2012. Independent status came in 1989, when new sports laws required a separate legal entity, though the ties to the residence remain.

The women's side has moved faster than the men's. In 2011 it became the first to join the men's team in the top division, and in 2021 it won the Liga Iberdrola. The men's team reached the División de Honor final in 2025 and lost 14–11 to El Salvador. No league title has followed the one in 1985.
