Estadio El Teniente-Codelco holds 14,087 people — Rancagua sits at the heart of Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins province, and the team carries the province's name along with its nickname, El Capo de Provincia.

O'Higgins came together on 7 April 1955, when O'Higgins Braden and América de Rancagua merged into one side. The new club first tried to wear the combined colours of its two predecessors — red, blue and white — but the Chilean federation blocked any resemblance to the national team's kit. The club turned instead to sky blue, borrowed from Uruguay's shirt, and the choice stuck long enough to earn the side its other name, La Celeste.

The defining result came in 2013, when O'Higgins beat Universidad Católica 1-0 to win the Torneo de Apertura, the club's only Primera División title. A year later they added the Supercopa de Chile, edging past Deportes Iquique on penalties after the two sides had drawn 1-1. Twice before that the club had reached the final of the Copa Chile and come away empty-handed — beaten by Universidad Católica in 1984 and by Colo-Colo on penalties in 1994.

The Copa Chile has never gone to Rancagua.
