Stal Nysa

Nysa's steelworks gave the club both its name and its identity when the section took shape in 1948, and for decades the town's volleyball fortunes tracked the factory that backed it. The mid-1990s brought the closest thing to a golden run: runner-up finishes in the top flight in 1994 and 1995, a Polish Cup final loss in 1995 avenged the following year with the title itself in 1996 under Andrzej Kaczmarek. Bronze medals followed in 1992 and 1998, and a home-grown forward named Bartosz Kurek left Nysa to become captain of the national team, a departure the club still gets credited for.

What came after was a long stretch in the second tier, broken by promotions in 1991 and 2012 and near-misses in 2015 and 2019. The wait ended properly when Stal won the suspended 2019/2020 1. Liga season and returned to the PlusLiga for 2020/21. Four seasons followed at the top, with the team pushing to back-to-back Grand Prix finals in 2022 and 2023 — losing both, but reminding the league it belonged there by beating champions ZAKSA 3:0 along the way. The 2024/25 campaign undid that work: seven wins, 23 losses, last place, and a straight relegation confirmed by a defeat to Barkom-Kazhany Lviv. Three coaches passed through that season alone before Francesco Petrella was let go once the drop was sealed. Australian Mark Lebedew now has the job of taking Stal back up.

None of it matters more locally than the games against ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle. The two towns sit close enough in Opole province that their meetings carry their own name, the Derby Opolszczyzny, and a result against ZAKSA is remembered independently of where either side finishes that season.
