Libertas Livorno

In the 1988–89 Serie A1 final, Andrea Forti scored at the last second of Game 5 against Philips Milano, and the basket was disallowed. Livorno lost the game and the Scudetto. It was the season when the 1980s side, known as the Gialloblu after the colours of the city's football club, was at its strongest.

That team was built partly from imports. Kevin Restani, Mark McNamara, David Wood, Micheal Ray Richardson, Jay Vincent and Scott May all played in Livorno. The club reached the quarter-finals of the FIBA Korać Cup in 1984–85 and again in 1989–90.

The end came in 1994. Libertas had merged with Pallacanestro Livorno three years earlier, and the merged club went bankrupt. The present Libertas Livorno 1947 was set up in 2004 as its symbolic heir, to carry the name and the history. The Modigliani Forum, formerly the PalaLivorno, holds 8,033.

The city's other club, Pielle Livorno, is the rival. The Derby Livornese, also called the Derby della costa, took on its edge in 1978 after a controversial match. The split follows the city's own: Libertas is associated with the political establishment, Pielle with the port workers.

Of the Italians from the historic era, Massimo Cosmelli is the name supporters still use when they talk about the club's best years.
