Marburg Women

Uwe Scheidemann had run into a wall with VfL 1860 Marburg's basketball department by 1995, and rather than argue further he set up Basketball-Promotion Scheidemann GmbH to take the Bundesliga team's rights with him. That split gave Marburg its own club a year later, and the women who had been playing under the VfL banner since 1992 took the court from the 1997/98 season as BC Marburg.

They were the Marlins first, a name they carried until 2004/05, when Blue Dolphins replaced it. The club plays in blue and white at the Georg-Gaßmann-Halle, a hall that holds a thousand.

The 2002/03 season stands apart: Marburg took both the German Championship and the DBBL-Pokal in the same year. More than two decades on, the team returned to a national final in 2024/25, losing out to Rutronik Stars Keltern.

Scheidemann is the name the club still traces itself back to — the man who, when the old arrangement broke down, chose to build something of his own rather than walk away from the game in Marburg.
