Nymburk Hradec Kralove Women

Before the club had a name of its own, it had a gym. Basketball reached Hradec Králové through Sokol, the gymnastics society, which opened its first basketball section in 1924 and gave the game a place to be played. The women's team grew out of that section and still carries the name, formally TJ Sokol Hradec Králové.

Its first real success came just after the Second World War. Playing as Železničářky Hradec Králové, the railway workers' side, the team won the Czechoslovak championship in 1946 and again in 1947, then finished second in 1949. The title has never come back. Since the Czech league began, Hradec has finished runner-up eight times, most recently in 2024/25, and six of those came in an unbroken run from 2019/20. The league trophy is the one thing the Lionesses, as they are known, have not won.

Cups have gone some way to make up for it. In March 2019 they beat KP Brno 68:63 in the Czech Cup final. In 2022 they won the first Federal Cup, the joint Czech-Slovak competition. They also reached the final of the Central Europe Women's League (CEWL) in 2018/19. The hall holds 600 people, and the closest match on the calendar is the derby with BK Pardubice.

Both cup wins came under Romana Ptáčková, who has been head coach since 2011 apart from a short spell away with the national team. Few coaches in Czech women's basketball have stayed so long at one club.

Roman Hamzová played for the club before 1993 and later reached the WNBA with the Orlando Miracle. She is the player Hradec most often points to when asked who came out of the club.
