There was a Sporting women's team before this one, and it did not last. The club had no women's side in green and white for 21 years, until the section was re-established on 12 June 2016.

The restart brought immediate results. In 2016/17, their first season back, the Lionesses won the Campeonato Nacional Feminino and the Taça de Portugal Feminina. Neither trophy left Alvalade for years. The league title stayed with them through 2023/24, eight seasons in a row. The cup was theirs every year from 2016/17 to 2022/23, and the Supertaça Feminina went the same way from 2017 to 2023.

Ana Borges, an international, wears the captain's armband. Beatriz Garcia came through the club's own academy, which matters for a section that had to be rebuilt from nothing. Benfica, the other Lisbon club, are the rivals, and the two meet in the city derby.

The first version of the section opened in October 1991 and was closed in 1995.
