The club was founded in Santa Maria da Feira, in the Aveiro district, on 18 March 1918. It played its first years without a settled kit; blue, now inseparable from the club's identity, was only adopted in 1931. Home matches are played at the Estádio Marcolino de Castro, built in 1962 and holding 5,401.

The nickname Fogaceiros comes from fogaceira, a sweet bread associated with the town. The clearest mark left in a cup competition is a Taça de Portugal quarter-final in 2016/17. Regionally, the Campeonato de Aveiro was won three times, in 1959/60, 1965/66 and 1967/68.

Promotion has not always followed a good league campaign: in 2010/11 Feirense finished second in the second tier but missed out on goal difference, a frustration corrected in 2015/16, when third place was enough. The clearest title of the professional era came in 2002/03, when the club won the Segunda Divisão B.
