Hibernian

Irish immigrants living in Edinburgh's Cowgate district wanted a club of their own, somewhere to gather on a Saturday afternoon that still felt like home. They formed Hibernian on 6 August 1875, taking a name that pointed straight back to Ireland.

The team have played home matches at Easter Road ever since, a ground regulars still call "the Holy Ground". It now holds 20,421, and the players run out in green shirts with white sleeves and shorts — colours that give the club its usual nickname, the Hibees, though older supporters still reach for the Cabbage.

The Scottish Cup win of 2016 stands out because of how long the wait had been: the club's previous success in the competition came in 1902. The Scottish league championship has been won four times, most recently in 1952, and the League Cup three times, last in 2007. Titles in the second tier have come more often, six in all, stretching from the 1890s to 2017.

Across the city stands Heart of Midlothian, and the fixture between the two sides is nearly as old as Hibernian itself. The first Edinburgh derby was played on Christmas Day 1875, which makes it one of the oldest derbies still contested anywhere in the world.
