Aberdeen

Pittodrie has stood on the same strip of ground on King Street since the club moved there, a bowl of red seating that holds 20,866 and has watched the team play out almost the whole of its history in the same red shirts, white shorts and red socks — a combination adopted in 1939, replacing the black-and-gold stripes worn before it. The old ground gave Aberdeen its nickname on the terraces, The Dons, and its second, less flattering one, The Reds, which is simply what the colours are.

The club itself came together on 14 April 1903, when three Aberdeen sides — Aberdeen F.C., Orion F.C. and Victoria United F.C. — merged into one. The name that survived the merger was the oldest of the three, Aberdeen F.C., dating to 1881, and the new club kept it rather than invent something else. It has not changed since.

Without a big-city rival close by, Aberdeen's fiercest contest in the league was manufactured largely by circumstance: through the 1980s, when the club was winning titles regularly, Dundee United was the team standing in the way often enough that the Scottish press started calling the fixture the New Firm. That decade produced the bulk of what still sits in the trophy room — four league championships between 1955 and 1985, and in 1983 the club beat Real Madrid to lift the European Cup Winners' Cup, then added the UEFA Super Cup the same year. The Scottish Cup has come back to Pittodrie eight times, most recently in 2025, ending a wait that had stretched back to 1995.

Pittodrie has hosted all of it — the merger that made the club, the 1980s run to Europe, and the long gap before that cup returned in 2025 — the same ground, filled the same way it always has been, in red.
