The ICC Women's Cricket World Cup is the premier One Day International (ODI) tournament for women's cricket. First held in 1973 in England, the event was originally organized by the International Women's Cricket Council (IWCC). The IWCC merged with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2005, bringing the tournament under its global governance. The competition takes place every four years, distinguishing it from shorter formats played more frequently.

The current structure, set for the 2025 edition, features eight teams. Qualification relies on the ICC Women's Championship, where the top five sides secure direct entry, while the remaining two spots are decided through a separate World Cup Qualifier tournament. The event itself is a standalone competition with no promotion or relegation system attached to its results. Gameplay consists of 50-over matches per side. The schedule follows a round-robin league stage, leading to semi-finals and a final. This knockout structure replaced the initial format in 1973, which featured only seven teams playing a round-robin without finals.

Australia holds the record for success, winning seven titles across the tournament's history. India claimed the most recent edition in 2025, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a final hosted in India. England won the inaugural 1973 tournament. The World Cup remains distinct from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, a 20-over competition launched in 2009, and the bilateral Women's Ashes series contested between England and Australia.
