About

The Azadegan League occupies a unique position in Iranian football as the second tier, sitting directly below the Persian Gulf Pro League and above League 2. Unlike the top flight, which operates as a fully professional entity, this competition retains elements of its origins, having served as the country's premier division until 2001. The structure is defined by a double round-robin format where eighteen clubs contest 34 matches each, with no playoffs to determine the winner. The title is awarded based solely on the final standing.

A distinguishing feature of the league is the inclusion of reserve teams from established Pro League sides. Clubs such as Sepahan Novin and Foolad Novin participate to develop youth talent, though these squads are explicitly ineligible for promotion. This rule prevents any single entity from holding two places in the highest division. Promotion is automatic for the top two finishers, who move up to join the wealthiest clubs in the country. Conversely, the bottom three sides face relegation to League 2.

The financial disparity between the two tiers is significant. While the Pro League enjoys extensive national coverage through IRIB, the Azadegan League relies heavily on local government support and limited digital streaming via platforms like Anten. Both competitions operate under the same broadcasting monopoly, which does not compensate the clubs for rights usage. Historically, Persepolis holds the record for most titles, having won four times during the era when the league was the highest level. In the current second-tier phase, Paykan and Fajr Sepasi lead with two victories each. The 2023–24 season concluded with Khaybar Khorramabad as champions, securing promotion alongside runners-up Chadormalu Yazd.

Organized by the Iran Football League Organization, the competition serves as a critical developmental pathway. It provides a competitive environment for aspiring clubs and reserves alike. The league's history reflects the evolution of Iranian football, transitioning from a national showcase to a regional feeder system. While the Pro League attracts the largest audiences, the Azadegan League remains essential for the sport's growth within Iran.
