ADR Xicalá and Aserrí played out a 1:1 draw in the Liga Ascenso Regular Season on Sunday. The result keeps both sides in contention, though it reshuffles the table expectations. We had backed the home side to win at 62 per cent confidence, but the match took a different turn.

Xicalá struck first when they found the net in the eleventh minute. They held the advantage for most of the afternoon, but Aserrí equalised late on. By then the game had opened up, and the visitors took the lead in the eightieth minute.

What followed was chaos. A red card came for Aserrí in the eightieth minute, and Xicalá responded by dragging their opponents out of position. They played the second half a man up and saw it out with a late red card of their own in the eighty-seventh minute.

It was not a match of sustained pressure. Xicalá had been on a good run coming in, with four wins and two draws from six games, but they could not close out the result. Aserrí sit top of the table with twenty points from twelve outings, and this draw does little to dent their position.

The points split means the gap at the summit remains. Xicalá move to fourteen points from six games, still unbeaten, but the win we expected never materialised. Sometimes the best-laid plans unravel in the final twenty minutes.
